New Initiatives Enrichen Afterschool Programs

WORTHINGTON---School days typically last as long as the average work day. Just as grown-ups have to work overtime hours every now and then, students sometimes must stay after school to get caught up with their grades. Worthington does offer plenty of opportunity for students who may need to stay after school, as Jerry Fiola and Nate Hanson, who are in charge of after school programs have explained on newsradio 730 KWOA. Fiola says that they are always trying to improve the program and so this year, some changes have been made. A more integrated four-day-a-week program has been implemented, and more help is coming with the program.

"The good thing about that is that even though it's an afterschool program and we do some things that are different, we're always trying to tie what they learn into the regular school curriculum," Fiola explains, "And so using existing teachers enables us to do that."

Fiola says that the district is fortunate that they are using many licensed teachers and others from the school who are working after classes end. Nate Hanson with the Area Learning Center has worked with Fiola’s 21st Century Grant to provide further after school learning for students.

"I think the thing we see is that students use enrichment activities to excel them in the classroom and make them more confident. and able to be more successful during the school day," Hanson stated.

Hanson’s program focuses on academic areas such as reading and math. For further information, interested persons may contact 316-61o5 or talk to any program coordinator at any of the school buildings.
