Harvest Taking Place in Northwestern Iowa

NORTHWEST IOWA----Despite some challenges, the harvest in northwest Iowa has been progressing nicely. So says Joel Dejong at Iowa State University Extension..."Parts of northwest Iowa that received rainfall in late August produced much better than the parts that missed that rainfall," he says.

DeJong goes on to explain that soybean yields were high in some places and lower in others. Early beans performed better than late beans due to frost, but the frost didn’t harm the late beans as much as expected.  The Associated Press reported yesterday that Iowa’s soybean harvest is seventy-percent complete as dry weather continues in the state. Dry conditions mean a continued risk of fires. Farmers are urged to be careful while working in the fields. As for the corn crop, stalk quality is not very good "We're starting to see a little more lodging occur out there. Those thirty to forty mile an hour winds don't help us out any," explains DeJong. According to DeJong, real issues with the ability to harvest are being seen, and as a lot of corn is in the teens already, much of it may be going into the bin pretty dry.
